PPC's Engagement Manager/Practice Aid Manager - Frequently Asked Questions

  • General Information
  • Known Issues

View AnswerWhat is the integration between e-Tools and the 2004 Engagement Manager?

With the August 2004 update to Engagement Manager, you can add any e-Tools document from the New Document Wizard. The e-Tools menu will display so you can select the appropriate document. (Previously the e-workpapers, IDLR and ELGR, showed up under a "PPC e-Workpapers" tab for insertion into Engagement Manager.)

You will also be able to insert a new engagement consisting of the e-Practice Aid documents, rather than the PAM formatted documents. This saves a significant amount of time setting up new engagements.

Caution: The diagnostic for Unsigned Audit Program Steps only works with the PAM formatted documents and not with the e-Practice Aid documents.

View AnswerCan I run PPC Reference Library/Engagement Manager on a wireless network?

A wireless network configuration for the PPC Reference Library/Engagement Manager is now supported as of the Accounting & Auditing Library 04-09 release and later. Prior releases were not certified for a wireless environment and are therefore not supported. The following are specifics on the wireless environment used in certification:

The PPC test environment included:

  • Linksys Broadband Router - Model WRT54G version 2
  • Linksys Wireless Network Adapter - Model WUSB11 version 2.8
  • Windows 2003 Server
  • Windows 2000 and XP workstations
  • Verified using 802.11b connections with 128 bit WEP enabled

PPC Technical Support may provide limited support with other wireless environments than stated above.

View AnswerSmartHeap errors or Engagement Manager has encountered a problem.

The following errors have been reported and were caused by an older version of a file known as DAO360.dll that was located outside of the normal location on the user's computer system; the file has been known to be installed by other software programs.

  • smartheap error handler recursively reentered
  • smartheap library mem_bad_pointer
  • Engagement Manager has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Try the following steps to correct the error:

  • Search the local drive for all occurrences of the DAO360.dll files on the affected computer.
  • Make sure there is only one version equal to or greater than version 3.60.3714.5 (ships with Jet 4.0 SP4) in both the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\DAO and

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32 (Windows XP) or
    • C:\WINNT\system32 (Windows 2000).
  • If there is more than one version, rename all the older versions as DAO360.old and place a copy of the newest DAO360.dll file version into the appropriate location.
  • The DAO360.dll should be registered in the DAO directory.
  • If you decide to keep the backup files when installing OS Service Packs, you may have several copies of DAO360.dll. It is not necessary to replace files in the backup directories.

View AnswerTechnical Bulletin - Anti-Spyware products interfering with product availability.

Anti-spyware products are removing registry entries that begin with any capitalization form of "PPC" in response to a Trojan virus. The virus targets a popular consumer product - not your PPC products. Unfortunately the PPC and WG&L e-Tool products as well as PPC's Smart e-Practice Aids-Risk Assessment are affected by the anti-spyware action since they rely on registry entries that begin with PPC.

Read the full Technical Bulletin. The latest pattern file as of 9/26/2007 no longer identifies PPC as a threat. Ensure that you get the latest pattern files before running the scan again.
