PPC Reference Library - CD-ROM Frequently Asked Questions
PPC
A red X next to the disc title usually indicates that the disc is not available in the location (either the drive or the folder) where the program has been told to find it.
To remove the red X next to a disc title, browse to the location where the disc resides and indicate to the program where to find the CD:
- Go to the Publication List
- From the Publications pull-down menu, select Modify Library Information.
- A dialog box opens. Highlight the title of the disc you want to use.
- Select Disc Path.
- A Browse window opens. Browse to the location of the disc or disc copy.
- Highlight the correct drive or folder for the disc
- Click OK.
If no error messages display, click OK on the Modify Library Information dialog and let the Publication List refresh. If you receive a message that tells you the path does not contain a valid PPC library, browse again to the correct path. Verify that the disc you want to use is in this location.
When the correct location is selected you will have access to the disc.
Removing the black Xs is different. These X indicators tell you that the products are unavailable because they have not been purchased. To fix this, first confirm that the proper Master Password (MPW) has been entered. If you don’t know your MPW, you can find it on your invoice or in the My Account area of ppc.thomson.com.
If the product is new to your account, you will need to enter the Product Access Code (PAC). You can find the necessary PACs in the My Account area on ppc.thomson.com. Keep in mind that if you are attempting to enter a PAC for an older disc you may need to call PPC Customer Service at (800) 323-8724 (option 7) for this code.
You can find details on how to enter the MPW and PACs on this page under the tab Passwords. Then select the FAQ on How do the master password and access codes work?.
Begin by opening the Reference Library.
- On the menu bar, click Publications.
- Click Modify Library Information. The Modify Library Information window will appear. This window contains information about every CD that has been loaded in the Reference Library.
- Locate the CD that you wish to remove by name AND release date.
- Click on the CD name one time to highlight it.
- Click Delete. A pop-up window will appear asking you to confirm that you wish to remove the configuration information for the selected CD.
- Click Yes if the CD name and release date match the CD you want to delete.
If you wish to remove another old CD listing, repeat these steps. When you are finished removing CD listings from the Reference Library, click Close at the bottom of the Modify Library Information window. The Reference Library will run an automatic Refresh All Publications.
The master password is part of your permanent PPC customer information, and is designed to open all the products you currently own. You must enter this code when installing the CD ROM. The master password security file is updated as each CD ROM is manufactured.
The access code is used to give you instantaneous access to a newly ordered product, and are different with each CD ROM. When the master password security file is updated on a new CD ROM the master password will open all products you currently own. If you order a product between the time the master password security file is generated and the CD ROM is shipped, you must use the access code found on the invoice until you receive the next disc.
To verifiy that your master password has been entered correctly, go to Edit and select Security Settings. Your master password will display in the box labeled master password.
Stand-alone computers:
Normally, when you receive your update CD-ROM, it is not necessary to run setup again. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive. Start the PPC Reference Library. It will detect a new version of the CD-ROM and prompt you to click OK to automatically install the program update.
Network:
Mount the new CD-ROM into your networked CD-ROM drive. From your workstation, browse to the CD-ROM and run Setup.exe. Click on the Network Install/Update icon. As the program progresses, it will show you the UNC, or mapped path, to the shared folder on your server where the Config folder is located. (If it doesn't show the Config folder, click the Browse button and browse to the shared folder.) When your users start their PPC Reference Library on their workstations, it will prompt them that there is a new CD-ROM and ask them to click OK to update automatically.
If your master password is not on file, it means the program couldn't find your master password in the security file on the CD-ROM. If the first character of your master password starts with a "1" or a "0", you will need to change it to an "I" (eye) or "O" (oh). As you receive additional CD-ROM updates, your master password should display as on file. At that point, you shouldn't need any product access codes.
Product access codes allow you to enter a code for any new software Guides that you purchase. This way you get instant access to a new Guide when you order it. The product access code for a Guide that is updating is also on your invoice when it is sent to you. Product access codes change with each update of the CD-ROM.
In the Reference Library, the program defaults to view only the current Library releases.
To view a previously released disc, open the program:
- Choose the Tools option from the menu bar ,
- Click Options.
- Go to the Display tab and check Display All Library Releases.
- Click the Apply button at the bottom of the screen
- Click OK.
Now go to View on the menu and click Refresh All Library Releases (F5) in the case of a Network install, or Refresh Local Publications (Ctrl – F5) in the case of a local install. All of your currently installed releases should now show.
Remember, you must have the appropriate disk in the drive to open one of the previous releases.
In accordance with our licensing agreement, your PPC Reference Library should be accessed from the PPC CD/DVD in your computer’s CD/DVD drive. This is the recommended method for accessing the data, and it is, by far, the easiest and the most user-friendly method. It also takes less maintenance each month for you and your staff.
If necessary, the Reference Library can be copied from the PPC CD/DVD to a network server or hard drive. (Remember, though, you are responsible for ensuring that the number of users of the software shall not exceed the number of authorized users for which you have paid.) This may improve the speed of the program, and will allow you to use the Reference Library without having the CD/DVD in the drive; however, you should consider several other factors before making this change:
- Available Space on Your System - Each Reference Library CD/DVD (A&A, Tax, and Consulting) contains approximately 700 MB of data. The size will be higher with the DVD format, possibly over 1 GB, and will vary between A&A and Tax. That much space must be available on your network or hard drive for each Reference Library CD/DVD you want to copy onto your system.
- Minimum System Requirements - Your computer hardware and software must meet the current specifications and configurations required to support PPC software.
- Manual Download Process - To keep your information current and to keep all built-in features (such as information links) working correctly, a manual download must be repeated each month for each CD/DVD release, which can be time-consuming for you or your staff.
Steps to copy a PPC Reference Library CD/DVD
- Create a folder for each disk, or empty the existing folder(s) you already have.
- Use Windows Explorer to copy the entire contents of each disk into its respective folder.
- After the copy is complete, run Setup.exe from the each folder you copied an updated disk to.
Due to the many variables of individual computer systems, PPC cannot be held responsible for the success of the download process or the performance of PPC products on each customer’s system. However, the Technical Support department is available to provide assistance if you decide to attempt the process.
If you have other questions about using your CD/DVD, you can reach our Technical Support Department by calling 1-800-323-8724, option 3.
With a new installation or an update, the list of publications will be red for the following reasons:
- You have not input your master password and/or your product access codes.
- When you installed or upgraded, an application was open and running.
If your master password appears and you try to enter your product access codes but it keeps saying that the code is invalid, check for applications open and running in the background. Also, make sure that the title of the CD-ROM is highlighted before entering any codes.
For step-by-step troubleshooting of this problem, try PPC's troubleshooting wizard, "All my Guides are red."
When you receive an update CD for your electronic library, it is necessary to update your system. The procedures differ slightly for single computers and network servers.
Please refer to the appropriate steps for your type of installation.
Click Network Install or Single Computer Install to select the the type of update installation you need to perform.
When you enter product access codes, there are a few things that you must do in order to have the program "understand."
- The "title" of the CD-ROM must be selected in the publication list.
- Right-click on the title of the CD-ROM that you just selected. Then click Security.
- This brings up the PPC License Entry box. Enter your product access code(s) in the space next to the Addbutton.
- Click the Add button.
- The product access code should move to the lower box. Click OK.
(Note: If the program doesn't accept the product access code, it is usually because the "title" of the CD-ROM is not highlighted and/or an application is open, or because the product access code is not for the current CD-ROM. The codes change with each release of the CD-ROM.)
Insert the CDRom and Run setup.exe.
Anti-spyware products are removing registry entries that begin with any capitalization form of "PPC" in response to a Trojan virus. The virus targets a popular consumer product - not your PPC products. Unfortunately the PPC and WG&L e-Tool products as well as PPC's Smart e-Practice Aids-Risk Assessment are affected by the anti-spyware action since they rely on registry entries that begin with PPC.
Read the full Technical Bulletin. The latest pattern file as of 9/26/2007 no longer identifies PPC as a threat. Ensure that you get the latest pattern files before running the scan again.
